Abstract

In this research indicators of community social reconstruction after war, such as intergroup colaboration and interdependence and intergroup socio-emotional relations, were studied. All used concepts were derived from the Prediction model of social reconstruction of a post-war community (Ajduković and Čorkalo Biruški, 2008). The aim was to compare perception of the social reconstruction degree in the two substantially different communities (Vukovar which is ethnically divided and Zagreb which is not). Also, we wanted to assess the contribution of socio-psychological state and national identity to the prediction of social reconstruction in these two communities. 173 participants took part in the research: 71 of them from the town of Vukovar and 102 from Zagreb, all of whom were born between the year 1974. and 1990. Two groups differ only in their national identity score which is higher for participants from Vukovar. Participants from both groups who have more positive affect toward members of another group and who justify past actions of their own group less also show more positive intergroup socio-emotional relations. In addition, participants from Vukovar who have higher national identity show fewer intergroup socio-emotional relations indicative for social reconstruction. Positive affect is a significant predictor for greater intergroup colaboration and interdependence in both groups. In addition, greater intergroup colaboration and interdependence in Vukovar show women and those who justify past actions of their own group less and in Zagreb those participant who are older and who ascribe guilt less.
