Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to link social changes after The Croatian War of Independence, researches on the consequences of modernization and feminist theories while analyzing existing literature and using examples from Croatian feature films to indicate the gender inequality of women which is visible in the Croatian film in the context of Croatian post-war society. After the collapse of socialism in Croatia occurred a strong retraditionalization of the society and the persecution of women in the private sphere. The Croatian film replicated the patriarchal form, exposed to the social environment and political climate which is characterized by increased nationalism and domination of the ruling party. Reasons for strengthening the patriarchal structures of power in the Croatian society are determined primarily by the long-term cooperative action of the tribal system of hierarchical authority. With the establishment of democracyin Croatia the patriarchal attitude toward women has been further strengthened by the increasing presence of Catholic ideas and eminently patriarchal paradigm of war. The risks of modernization in Croatia are mostly affecting women, who due to severe socio-economic status and the "triple duty" (job, house, extra work) are forced to seek additional business, while the ruling parties did not particularly stand out in their approaches to women's issues. Democracy in this paper is seen from a feminist perspective as a system of ruling "male club". The contemporary Croatian films are referred to the the Croatian War of Independence, to confront the consequences of war or overcoming negative consequences of the war. The visibility of women in Croatian cinematography is very low and a small number of directors as Kreso Golik, Zvonimir Berković and in recent period Matanić, have had experimental approach to dealing with women's issue. The vast majority of films is focusing on the role of exemplary patriarch, while the role of women is outside the essential focus and limited to the family sphere. Attitudes that are rooted in our society, in the media of film were brought to the extreme, so our films abound in chauvinism, sexism, xenophobia and homophobia. Not many movies were filmed from the perspective of the female character and violence against women runs as constant form.
