Abstract

This paper provides an overview of the sociological analysis of the development of the daily press and its influence on public opinion through three decades in Croatia: from the regime era and strict controlled eighties, through the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia and the birth of the democratic press in a democratic and independent Croatia of the nineties until the time of the privatization of major publishing media and entry of (foreign) capital in the leading Croatian daily newspapers, as well as sudden internetization of society, and thus the beginning of the crisis of the press and newspaper industry in the early 2000s in Croatia. From the aspect of social, political and technological changes in Croatia the credibility and confidence in the print media today have also been investigated, as well as the causes and consequences of falling circulation of the daily newspapers, together with their losing race with electronic media and above all the new media platforms such as the Internet, Facebook and Twitter. The paper problematizes and verifies the thesis: a) that the Internet media and social networks have become a new source of information; b) that the impact of the daily print media has gradually decreased in proportion to their decreasing circulation numbers and declining living standards of the Croatian population; c) so that therefore newspapers, ie. daily newspapers today have lesser, almost minimal impact on public opinion in Croatia.
