Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine differences between children with school failure and children without learning difficulties in levels of anxiety on the Fear and Anxiety Scale for Children and Adolescents (SKAD-62) and indicators of neurological and emotional disorders at Bender gestalt visual test (LB). The sample included 70 students of classes 4 to 7 in elementary school with failures in learning and 70 students without learning difficulties, equal in age and gender. Discriminant analysis was used in data processing. Children with school failure achieved significantly higher scores in total anxiety, social anxiety, somatization and anxiety sensitivity. Groups of children without learning difficulties and school failure did not differ according to the results on the subscales of anxiety, separation anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Children with school failure have a significantly higher number of indicators of organic damage than the group of children without learning difficulties. Groups of children did not significantly differed in respect to the total number of emotional indicators. Ins for taking that the agreement among evaluators for specific indicators were very low, use of this indicator has no particular clinical significance, at least when children with school failure are concerned. Indicators of organic damage have the highest contribution in distinguishing groups, while measures of anxiety only moderately contribute. These results indicate the importance of instruments for assessment of anxiety and perceptual-motor function in psychodiagnostic assessment of children with school failure, due to a better understanding of their difficulties and planning appropriate interventions.
