Abstract

Christ's prayer in the Gethsemane Garden or the Agony in the Garden as one of the events of his life described in the New Testament in all four Gospels is linked to the Passion of Christ and is one of the most frequently depicted themes in Christian art. It refers to the event that took place between the Last Supper and the Betrayal of Christ, and Christ's arrest on the Mount of Olives where he experienced an emotional turmoil the night before his crucifixion. In this paper, this topic is analyzed on examples of paintings by artists of the Roman, Venetian and Bolognese school of painting, from the late Renaissance through Manirism to Baroque, with emphasis on the works of three artists - Taddeo Zuccaro, Jacopo Bassano and Guercino. The historical context and the circumstances in which these works were created are explained in order to clarify not only the differences between the mentioned schools but also the mutual influences and similarities between them through their contacts and through the influence of their representatives.
