Abstract

The thesis presents an overview and analysis of the work of Lovro Artuković in the period from 1980s to 2014, the paintings in which the author incorporates quotations or refers to the motives used by the Old Masters of Renaissance and Baroque. Based on the research of the Artuković’s work one can observe transitions in the way author refers to the motives and works of the Old Masters. Founding his expression on comic and Pop-art, 80s' Artuković, in the time of the return of the traditional art forms of painting, transfers quotations from Sandro Botticelli into his own work enriching them with personal iconography. In the 90s proclamation of the death of the art of painting, Artuković stays loyal to painting in its traditional representative sense. In his objective, Berlin phase, Artuković experiments with the characteristics of the painting as a media approaching the matter analitically and conceptually by creating paintings and referring to the traditional themes and solutions used by the Old Masters such as Botticelli, Raphael, Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Titian and Hans Holbein.
