Abstract
This paper deals with historical development and current activity of Nova Gradiška City Library. It's the oldest cultural institution in this city with more than a century and a half of its work. The paper begins with definition of public library, function, task and meaning of public library in local community and than a brief review of the history of public libraries in the world and in Croatia. Second part of this paper contains a brief history of Nova Gradiška. Third part of the paper is about historical development of the library in Nova Gradiška started with first public reading room founded in 1849. to Nova Gradiška City Library as an independent institution in 2000. The last part of the paper contains todays activities of Nova Gradiška City Library, from its independence in 2000. till 2016., based on library annual reports for this period.
