Abstract

The topic of this interdisciplinary master’s thesis is “jeans prose” in Vojvodina – the novel “Memoirs of a Pimp” in the context of the work of László Végel. Given that the author is a member of the Hungarian national minority in Vojvodina, this novel can be observed within both Hungarian and Serbian (or South Slavic) literary context. The aim of the thesis is to show the features of “jeans prose” in Vojvodina by using the example of László Végel's first novel. In this master’s thesis we will deal with several key topics, primarily with analysing the author in Hungarian and Serbian/Yugoslav/South Slavic context, as well as with the relevance of the novel five decades after its first publication. We will address two key aspects of “jeans prose”, which are the language and the narrator in “Memoirs of a Pimp” and we will also mention other features of Végel's “jeans prose”. A parallel will be drawn with a conceptually similar work by the Hungarian author Tibor Déry, the novel “An Imaginary Report on an American Pop Festival”.
