During the 19th century, as one of disciplinary measures in western schooling system was accepted the practice of recording school punishment books, also called “black books”. A valuable copy of the punishment book from Zagreb, known as Sramotna knjiga Glavne učione, has been keeping in Croatian School Museum. The research is based on a handwritten records of undesired behavior of students and punishments from 1857 to 1893 in two primary schools in Zagreb, Glavna učiona (from 1857 to 1875) and Donjogradska pučka škola (from 1875 to 1894). Through a few decades of records, about one thousand students have been reported for misbehaving or violating the school rules, such as rude behavior or speech at school, swearing, spitting, throwing rocks, street fights, theft, skipping classes or wandering the streets. For every offense they would be recorded in the punishment book, or even punished with imprisonment, kneeling or caning. All recorded offenses and students have been analized and compared with taken disciplinary measures. Research also discovered wrong attribution of The Book itself, missing additional place of keeping and recording.
