Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to define the public library, its function and activities, as well as present the legal and financial context within which it operates. The aspects of public library management will be presented – aspects of which services in public libraries consist, including: building the library fund, the formation of collections, acquisition and processing of library material and its protection. They will be explained with actual examples from the work of the library Gradska knjižnica i čitaonica „Metel Ožegović“ in Varaždin.
