Abstract

Developing new services and approaching user needs present both an imperative and a challenge for every library. Higher education libraries are defined by cooperation with their parent institution and it is their mission to support the teaching and research process within their community. In the context of the current transformation of scholarly communication and publishing models, academic libraries increasingly find their important place as publishers, either running their own publishing programs or in collaboration with university (or faculty) presses. Library competencies related to the e-resources life-cycle and distribution (digital formats, metadata standards, identifiers, standards for the access and discovery, knowledge of tools and platforms for publishing and deposit as well as long-term preservation) fit perfectly into new goals of higher education institutions: ensuring the highest availability and visibility of their own editions and scientific contributions. This paper will present and describe the ways in which the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Library in Zagreb supports the specific segment of the publishing activities of the parent institution: student journals publishing. Due to the size and quantity of students and the diversity of study programs offered at the Faculty, a significant number of student journals from different fields of science are published. In a series of features, student journals differ from scientific and professional journals, primarily because of the difficulty in achieving editorial continuity. With the support of the Library, it is possible to enable the permanence and professionalism of the student editorial work, to provide technological and infrastructural support and to ensure the permanent preservation, availability, and visibility of published content. Through the example of collaborating librarians and students in the project of publishing student journals, the process of designing new services is presented, where librarians, considering the needs of users, especially students and teachers of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, contribute to the quality of the entire institution.
