Abstract

The pluralism of style in Saint Rosalia by Antun Kanižlić According to literary criticism, Kanižlić’s Saint Rosalia is mostly identified as a religious baroque poem written to the Dubrovnik religious poem standards, namely Gundulić’s Tears of the Prodigal Son and Đurđić’s Mandalijena Pokornica, and Kanižlić himself as a behindhand baroque author. The reasons for this are the subject, motifs and composition of Saint Rosalia, as well as the historical and social conditions because of which literature in Slavonia was not »keeping pace« with the southern one. Kanižlić varies the form of the religious poem by inserting digressions that expand the composition; he introduces new forms, folk elements and the epistolary form. Some of these steps may be considered innovative, while others can be linked to similar instances in older Croatian literature. Kanižlić’s pluralism of style is to be revealed through an overview of all the aforementioned features of Saint Rosalia.
