Abstract

Islamic feminism is a form of feminism founded within the framework of Islam and by interpretation of the Qur'an that is trying to prove that Islam does not preach non-tolerance or misogyny. Although the term is relatively new, the history of women's struggle and political organisation in muslim majority countries is long. The topic is relevant today due to the political turmoil not only in the Middle East and in North Africa (e.g., Arab spring, shifts of power and subsequent wars), but also in the West (e.g. refugee crisis in Europe, a growing Islamophobic sentiment in the United States). The main obstacle to full equality between men and women is not so much in cultures and religions (though they serve as means of subjection and manipulation by the dominant social group), but in a non-egalitarian economic system of capitalism. The Western liberal feminist discourse with it's often patronizing view is more often than not an attempt to "counterfeit" Islam in the service of Western imperialism, which did not contribute improving the position of Muslims in Muslim societies. Today, when Muslims and Islam are controversial topics of heated debates, feminist movement in standing in front of a challenge: can mainstream feminism accept a different type of discourse and is multicultural feminism even possible?
