Abstract

Psychologists differ in theoretical orientations, values and traits. Psychology students develop stereotypes during the course of their studies about psychologists in different areas and it is possible that they choose the area of their work based on these stereotypes. The goal of this research was to determine the content of the stereotypes of psychology students about psychologists working in clinical, school, I/O psychology and research, as well as to determine if there is a correlation between the estimation of desirability of the traits of psychologists in their desired area and their own traits. The research consisted of two parts, in the first part the participants were 55 psychology students in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, and in the second part there were 236 participants who were psychology students all over Croatia. Both parts were conducted online. The results have shown that the perception of psychologists of different areas differs among students mostly in the way that the most desirable traits for clinical and school psychologists are people oriented, for researchers task oriented, and that the desirability of traits for the I/O psychologists is usually between these areas, although it is more often closer to research. The correlation between the estimation of desirability of traits in the desired area and their own traits has been shown for school and I/O psychology for most traits, and for a half of the traits for clinical psychology and research.
