Abstract

The aim of this research was to test gender differences in body satisfaction, body image importance, the frequency of partner’s positive and negative feedback on appearance, as well as to determine the possibility of predicting body satisfaction based on some psychological variables and variables related to romantic relationship. The sample consisted of 371 participants. The questionnaires included measurements of body satisfaction, body image importance, romantic relationship satisfaction and appearance feedback from romantic partner. The results have partially confirmed the hypotheses. The results show that there are no gender differences in body image importance, body satisfaction and frequency of partner’s positive feedback about appearance. We found that men get more negative feedback from their partner than do women. Hierarchical regression analysis confirmed that for women the desired weight gain/loss and positive feedback on appearance are significant predictors of the satisfaction with one's body while for men the significant predictor is negative feedback on appearance.
