Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine relationship between marital satisfaction and parental behavior, and whether mothers and fathers differ in their marital satisfaction and the use of different parenting procedures. Participants of the study include mothers (N = 1029) and fathers (N = 885) of children attending 5th through 8th grade in elementary schools. Marital satisfaction was measured by a single item, parental behavior with the URP-32 Questionnaire, and we also measured some additional socio-demographic characteristics. The results have shown that fathers are more satisfied with their marriages than mothers. Additionally, we found that mothers applied positive parental behaviors more often than fathers, and that fathers applied negative parental behaviors more often than mothers. Both mothers and fathers use more positive than negative parental behavior. The results of regression analyses indicate that higher marital satisfaction in mothers and fathers predicts the use of more positive parental behaviors, and the use of less negative parental behaviors. Increased use of positive parental behavior in both mothers and fathers is also predicted by the younger age of children; and in the case of mothers, length of marriage. Negative parental behaviors are predicted by the male gender of the child for both mothers and fathers, with an effect of education for mothers where less educated mothers use more negative parental behaviors.
