Abstract

Literature intended to produce a subversive effect on specific segments of the established social order has been part of the world's publishing industry all throughout history. Aware of the power of the written word, people have long used this type of literature as a means of performing "ideological, religious and other kinds of subversion inside enemy territories". However, advocates of the existing social norms are also well aware of the subversive potential of the written word. In today's interconnected world, one type of subversive literature, known as "conspiracy theories", is especially popular. While some accept these theories as plausible and others openly dismiss them, it is safe to say that very few are left indifferent upon hearing one such theory. We are therefore left with the question of whether these theories pose a threat to today's postmodern culture or whether they are simply entertainment for the masses. The purpose of this thesis is to study the presence of conspiracy theories in the Croatian publishing industry, organize and systematize any collected information and attempt to analyze what publishers publish works that discuss conspiracy theories or other closely related phenomena(e.g. secret societies).
