Abstract

The aim this study was to verify contribution of variables social presence, public self consciousness and self monitoring to self-disclosure on Facebook and to examine a connection between self reported self-disclosure and amount of information on Facebook profiles. Study was conducted through Facebook profile constructed for purposes of the study. Data were collected by filling an online questionnaire which was sent to participants through Facebook. There were 195 participants, 88 males and 107 females, age range 17-31, mostly ages 18-24. Participants filled out Self-consciousness Scale, Social Presence and Privacy Questionnaire, Self-monitoring Scale and Revised Self-disclosure Scale and also pieces of information were collected from participants Facebook profiles. Results show that overall variables of self-reported self-disclosure and overall measure of amount of information on Facebook profiles are not distinctive enough and factors of self-disclosure and individual categories of profile information show greater connection with other measures than overall scores. Honesty/accuracy factor of Revised Self Disclosure Scale is most contributed by social presence and self monitoring whilst the amount of profile information, with special reference to 'arts and entertainment' category is most connected with age. Self-reported self-disclosure has shown low connections to amount of information on Facebook profiles. In analysis self-disclosure is predicted in a small degree and for future studies it is necessary to try other ways to operationalize the amount of information on Facebook profiles.
