Abstract

Business intelligence involves the process of collecting data and information from internal and external business environment as well as converting them into business knowledge which provides the basis for making business decisions. It is a strategic management resource and a critical factor in the formulation of quality business strategies. In European Union business intelligence is implemented as a separate institutionalized business function ranging from 73% to 96%. The aim of this paper was empirical research in order to determine awareness of companies in Eastern region regarding the business intelligence, implementation of business intelligence system in the region and the company plans concerning the future use of business intelligence. The research was conducted by online survey on a sample of 1000 largest Croatian companies in the period from October 2010 to April 2011. For the purposes of this study subsample of companies in Eastern Croatian regions (N=30) was selected. According to the survey results, 17% of Eastern companies has a separate business intelligence organizational department, while 54% of companies occasionally apply business intelligence as a part of some other business activities. Companies of Eastern Croatian region are lagging behind advanced business world when speaking of business intelligence usage. This requires additional investment in the business intelligence, its understanding and new staff education. Throught that the ultimate goal can be achieved, professional and systematic use of business intelligence for successful operation in the global market.
