Abstract

The arrival of the population in the cities and their increase is not a historical novelty, this trend is also presented in previous civilizations. But what makes them different through history is the rapidity, massiveness, simultaneity and major changes in spatial distribution of the population. Today, urbanization is becoming a general and rapid worldwide process which is being spread as “urban way of life”. One of the negative consequences of this process is unequal concentration of the population and the inability of small towns to create conditions for a comfortable life. Croatian state space is economic and infrastructure unequally developed and there are great differences in the structure of the population regarding to demographic characteristics, which completely prevents the modernization of Croatian society. For this reason the model of urbanization, proposed in The Strategy of Spatial Planning of the Republic of Croatia, attaches great importance to strengthening the functions of middle cities in order to contribute to the regional development of Croatia. However, regarding to the analysis of socio-demographic indicators of larger medium-sized cities, with special reference to Bjelovar, it is still not done enough in that field of larger medium-sized cities becoming centers of economic, cultural and social life, which would also serve as a barrier to excessive metropolization and concentration of population in major Croatian towns.
