Abstract

Practical experience in psychology has shown that the contents of tests gradually become publically known, which generates a need for a constant development of new intelligence tests. The aim of this study is to analyze 35 items of the preliminary ST-1 spatial abilities test and to propose its shortened version. The test was administered to 212 subjects including university graduates, high school graduates, high school students and university students of different orientations. The alotted time was 40 minutes. The results were normally distributed, and the average difficulty index (p = 0.630) shows that the test may have been too easy. The Cronbach Coefficient Alpha points to a high degree of reliability of the test (± = 0.874). The factor analysis results in a number of factors, but the size of their eigenvalues points to the existence of one general factor. Based on the results obtained, a shorter version of the test is proposed, containing 32 items. Normal distribution of results is preserved, with only slight changes in metric characteristics. Reliability has increased (±=0.876), while the factor structure makes the general factor even more prominent. To conclude, the shortened ST-1 Test features improved efficiency, as well as quality. Further research should verify the results obtained in this study on a representative sample, apply the shorter version of the test in practice and conduct standardization. Since this test was designed to test examinees via computers, it is recommended to check whether its metric characteristics are changed through this means of test application.
