Abstract
This thesis deals with the processes of urban transformation of Istanbul in the period 1980-2014
taking into account its impact on the informal settlements (tur. gecekondu) in Istanbul. Based on the
review of the available literature and material we gathered by conducting two interviews with the
prominent Right to City activits, this thesis argues that the processes of urban transformation of
Istanbul is integral part of neoliberal urbanist policies. As such, it generates and reproduces urbansocial
wealth on the one and urban-social poverty on the other hand.
