Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between leisure time and quality of intimate relationships of emerging adults. The survey was conducted online. Five hundred and seventy three emerging adults aged 18-35 years who are in a relationship, but not married and not living with a partner, participated in this study. Participants completed List of Ways of Spending Leisure and the Love Scale (Braiker and Kelley, 1979), as well as the Inventory of Affection and Antagonism (Huston, Kamenov and Huić, 2010). The findings show that men and women do not differ in their reports on the total amount of time and the type of leisure time (indoor, outdoor and events) spent with their partner. Couples that participated in the study spent most of their shared leisure time indoors listening to music and watching television, and the smallest amount of time in social activities such as going to museums and theaters. Regarding the total amount of leisure time spent together, there is no significant correlation with antagonistic or affectionate behaviors. Furthermore, spending time indoors, gender and going to events have emerged as significant predictors of expressing affection. There was also significant contribution of predictor variable of spending time together at events for explanation of criteria variance of expressing antagonism. Finally, there was a significant contribution of predictor variable of time spent indoors, for explaining variance of quality of intimate relationships.
