Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine some sources of construct irrelevant variance, factors that affect the result of the test according to the respondents' self-assessments. On that occasion, we designed the Questionnaire of sensitivity to distractors while taking the test (QSDWTT). Its psychometric properties indicate the one factor structure and high reliability, which tells us of the existence of a general sensitivity to distractors while taking the test. Together with the Questionnaire SDWTT we applied the Questionnaire of behavior in the situation of taking test (QBSTT-1). Personality dimensions (conscientiousness, neuroticism and impulsivity), gender and measures of academic achievement were used as the correlates. The study was conducted among 459 respondents, 253 high school students and 206 college students. The results show that respondents estimate that most of the distracting factors affect them to a greater or great extent. Questionnaire SDWTT is most associated with neuroticism (r = .477) and test anxiety (r = .366) and less with conscientiousness and impulsivity. Regression analysis has shown that the best predictors of Questionnaire SDWTT are neuroticism and gender and that they explained 27 % of variance. Individuals sensitive to distractors while taking the test are slightly more thorough in their work, but less persistent and are more bothered with time limit. As for the relation of Questionnaire SDWTT and academic achievement, the correlation is moderately low and only on a sample of high school students. Among other variables, the academic success is moderately correlated with conscientiousness and impulsivity, the impact of time limits and persistence in solving test.
