Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore the differences in levels of implicit and explicit self-esteem between positive and negative perfectionists. Study was conducted in two separate time periods on Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, Department of Psychology. 140 participants filled in Self-liking and Self-competence Scale, Perfectionistic Self-presentation Scale, Perfectionism Questionnaire and Implicit Associations Test. Results showed that students with higher levels of perfectionistic striving scored significantly higher on self-competence and three facets of perfectionsitic self-presentation than students with lower levels of perfectionistic striving. Students with higher levels of perfectionistic concerns scored significantly lower on self-liking and higher on three facets of perfectionistic self-presentation than students with lower levels of perfectionistic concerns. Results showed a significant difference in self-liking, nondsiplay of perfection, and nondisclosure of perfection between positive and negative perfectionists. Positive perfectionists scored significantly higher on self-liking and lower on nondisplay and nondisclosure of perfection than negative perfectionists did. Positive perfectionists also had significantly higher levels of implicit self-esteem. There was no significant difference in self-competence and perfectionistic self-promotion between positive and negative perfectionists.
