Abstract

The aim of this study was to design the Implicit association test for power motive and examine its psychometric properties. Our research was conducted on 75 participants all of which are students at Department of Psychology at Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. IAT was used as a measure of implicit power motive. In this study it has shown good psychometric properties. Dominance-prestige scale was used as a measure of explicit power motives. We found low to moderate positive correlations between implicit and explicit measures of power motive. Results have shown that participants who tend to have higher scores on the dominance and prestige subscales, also tend to connect more implicit power motive with the self-concept. Participants were rated by close friends and/or relatives on Dominance-prestige scale. Those ratings were taken as the first criterion. Expected connections between implicit and explicit measures of the criterion have only been partially confirmed. Participants who had higher scores on dominance subscale, were also reported as more dominant by people close to them. Correlation between implicit measures and criterion was not significant. Also, no significant correlation was found between IAT and the second criterion - extrinsic motivation, measured by two instruments: Work Preference Inventory and Aspiration Index. Extrinsic motivation was positively correlated with the explicit measure of power; participants who had higher scores on a scale of prestige, assessed themselves as more extrinsically motivated.
