Abstract

The following paper discusses the idea and constructions of immigrant identities on examples of ten international migrants in Zagreb. In the text , the author presents the experiences of individual migrants and their lives, in a new social environment; reasons for migrating; processes of adaptation and integration; in addition to maintaining transborder relations. The main theoretical frame used is a transnational paradigm under which topics of multiple belonging and perceptions of home are discussed. It leads to the main thesis of hybridity and change of identity. The life of migrants, and therefore their identities, is in a constant process of (re)defining. Field research material used in this paper shows how feelings of belonging and identification can surpass national borders, but also how contemporary migrant experiences allow feelings of embedness in more than one society. That way migrant identities are understood as fluid constructions in a constant process of change and upgrading.
