Abstract

Research has shown variations in female reproductive behaviour across the menstrual cycle. The aim of this study was to explore whether women chose more provocative clothes during the fertile phase of the menstrual cycle. Choice of apparel was made via a computer program consisting of a female figure and clothing components. The participants' (N =19) task was to choose clothes they would put on if going out on a date. This task was performed twice, once during the ovulatory phase and once during the menstrual phase of the cycle. Results indicate that participants reveal a greater amount of skin during the ovulatory phase. It seems this effect is not related to some stable traits, and the possible relation with a long-term/ short-term mating strategy is inconclusive. This behaviour is probably an adaptation increasing the chances of attracting a mate during the fertile period, and estradiol might be the underlying hormone.
