Abstract

Cloning is a current topic that opens very sensitive issues relating to human rights, to what awaits us in the future, and the challenges that are placed by medical advances and achievements. Although the violent reaction of most of the public at the news of a possible human cloning caused the negative omen for the technique – cloning procedures have a certain value. Therefore, cloning of genes and cells for research and therapeutic purposes, and the cloning of whole organisms in reproductive purposes, must be clearly distinguished. This paper contains answers to important issues in the field of cloning, such as the goals of cloning, pros and cons, the reasons for cloning animals or humans, etc. When we talk about cloning, and also other bioethical issues, the views of the Catholic Church are discussed and therefore the fundamental Catholic theological-philosophical arguments against reproductive cloning are also presented, as opposed to liberal arguments that advocate cloning. Faced with this issue of cloning, we will see whether biotechnology in cloning remains a highly risky, dangerous and ethically problematic procedure.
