Abstract
This work deals primarily with the importance of the motive of compiling a list of things which writers are using as a builiding element in shaping the narative line of the novels and stories they tell. By analizing the novels Prokleta Avlija by Ivo Andrić, Nevidljivo pismo by Pavao Pavličić, Posljednje putovanje u Beč by Irena Vrkljan and Buick Rivera by Miljenko Jergović, we have confirmed its unquestionable importance. The paper is the result of the reading of novels and relevant scientific resources with the emphasis on the importance of the motive of the compiling for an individual as as well as for the society, i.e. its meaning in understanding the stories hidden behind the listed things. The initial premise is to confirm that the characters, small and big history, temporal, spatial and cultural characteristics and in the end the identity (personal, family and cultural) can be read from the motive of the listing of things. Besides, we have connected the motive of listing with the story as a unique and universal category, omnipresent and always present in human conscience and existence as well as with the right to the story (of characters and of readers).
