Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between Machiavellianism and different personality models, as well as testing the incremental validity of Machiavellianism in predicting counterproductive work behaviors. Other personality models used in this research are the Big-Five personality model, honesty/humility from the HEXACO model and dispositional self-control. The participants were people employed in organizations in Croatia (N=217). Machiavellianism was measured using the Machiavellianism scale from the Short Dark Triad (SD3) questionnaire, Big-Five model using the IPIP-50, honesty/humility factor using the 10 items from HEXACO-60, and self-control using the Dispositional Self-Control Scale (DSC). Counter productive work behavior was measured using the CWB-C checklist. Results show that female participants score slightly lower on the Machiavellianism scale. Machiavellianism showed negative correlations with Big Five emotional stability and positive correlation with Big Five intellect. Also, Machiavellianism negatively correlated with the HEXACO honesty/humility factor and dispositional self-control. Machiavellianism added to the prediction of counterproductive work behaviors above the other personality variables used in this study: Big-Five personality model, honesty/humility from the HEXACO model and dispositional self-control.
