Abstract
Purpose and objective of this doctoral thesis is to interconnect theoretical knowledge with the results of scientific research with the main goal of creating and offering models of structured reading promotion programmes by guided reading in public libraries. Public library has to be positioned as a “natural place” for conducting special reading promotion programmes (as a regular service) which psychologically, cognitively, socially and culturologically affect reading/the reader, as well as development of reading promotion by guided reading. This doctoral thesis contains two researches – field of evaluation of special reading promotion programmes in public libraries and experimental research of impact of special reading promotion programmes by guided reading on users (chosen focus groups) and a librarian as a programme leader. They have in common the appointment of a public library as a “natural place” for the communication circle author – work – librarian – reader. Research objectives are set accordingly and four hypotheses are formulated. The first research was carried out in the period from the year 2013 to 2015. Questionnaires were used to research and evaluate how a public library with its new users offer, reading promotion programmes, adapts to changes in users approach (individually) and contemporary sociopsychological tendencies in the society as such. The second research, experimental, was carried out from 2013 to 2015 in guided reading workshops (focus groups). Results show that the role of a library and a librarian as well as attitude of public librarie users in the contemporary world changes. Based on these postulates, existing reading promotion programmes in public libraries were conceptually evaluated by longitudinal research during the period 2013-2015 using questionnaire results and public library was positioned as an institution which according to its tasks forms services which actively influence the development of individuals and society by means of reading. The 2013 survey showed that a small number of public libraries had special reading promotion programmes (47% of libraries) while a repeated survey in 2015 showed that 87% of public libraries in Croatia conduct special reading promotion programmes by guided reading. Based on experimental researches expected results were confirmed – impact on efficacy of conducting guided reading programmes as well as strengthening reading self-confidence. Participants in guided reading programmes (focus groups) positively evaluated guided reading workshops on an evaluation form scale from 1 to 10 with high grades 6 and 10. Based on all the above, Guidelines for structured reading promotion programmes in public libraries were proposed focusing on guided reading.
