Abstract
The fall of communism hinted at the importance of civic and citizenship education which was then introduced into school systems either as a special subject, as an intercurricular topic or on the level of the school system in general. Post-communist countries face many problems with the implementation of this school subject and this is caused by the consequences of living in the communist system: the teachers grew up in a different value system from the one they have to put across to their students, there is a lack of money for teacher training, school curricula are overloaded and allow little space for intercurricular implementation of civic and citizenship education, with the biggest problem being the disharmony between the messages given in class and the experience of real life. Slovenia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina started introducing some form of civic and citizenship education as soon as they shifted to democracy and now they have special school subjects dedicated to this topic at least on some levels of education, while Croatian experience boils down to an unsuccessful attempt to introduce this subject in the school year 2014/2015, so now it exists only as an intercurricular topic, which gives rise to a justified doubt that it is being enforced at all. This situation shows how necessary it is to make thorough changes in the Croatian school system and to raise consciousness about the importance of civic and citizenship education.
