Abstract

Life and work of Franc and Krištof Andrej Jelovšek is a theme of many Croatian authors's writings. Making an introduction with collected literature, this thesis first of all aspires after putting the Central European baroque art in the wider context of that day's society and it's life in different areas, such as political and cultural, particularly considering activity of artistic workshops. Then it represents illusionistic painting with it's most important concepts, as well as it's development in the course of 17th and the biginning of the 18th century. Special place in that proces takes Andrea Pozzo whose Perspectiva pictorum and architectorum played an important role in a work of 18th century's wall painters. Review of the most significant artists and their works in the field of illusionistic painting in Slovenia, brings a cultural and artistic picture of Franc and Krištof Andrej Jelovšek's homeland where they began with their formation as wall painters and where they made the vast majority of their works. Notable role in Slovenian cultural life played Giulio Quaglio and his work for cathedral of Ljubljana, which first inspired Franc Jelovšek for his creative work. After describing a life and work of Franc and Krištof Andrej Jelovšek in Slovenia ang giving a short review of illusionistic painting in continental Croatia in 17th and 18th century, this thesis goes on with a detailed description of two most important wall paintings that these artists left in Croatia, as well as their iconographic programs. These are illusionistic altar in the Franciscan church of Assumption of Mary in Samobor made in 1752. and illusionistic altar in the former Jesuit church of St. Catharine in Zagreb, made in 1762. Thesis ends with a review of the most important works of artists who continued to work in tradition of a father and son Jelovšek.
