Abstract

The thesis discusses glass slides used for the projection of transparent positive images selected from the photo library of the Department of Art History of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb, namely black-and-white reproductions of Venetian painting from the 15th to the 18th century purchased during the first half of the 20th century. According to archival records, the first 500 glass slides were purchased for the Department by Isidor Kršnjavi (Našice, 22 April 1845 – Zagreb, 3 February 1927) in 1913. The photo library was significantly enriched between 1947. and 1972., during the professorship of Grgo Gamulin (Jelsa, 21 August 1910 – Zagreb, 2 October 1997), who obtained most of the slides related to Venetian painting of the Renaissance and Baroque and implemented them into his lectures. Glass slides preserved in the photo library of the Department of Art History represent an important segment of its history and provide an insight into the teaching methods and use of photographic reproductions in the first half of the 20th century.
