Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine gender differences in musical performance anxiety (MPA), perfectionism and music performance self-efficacy, as well as to examine relationships between those three constructs. The data were collected on a sample of 153 college students at Music academy in Zagreb, who responded to three different questionnaires: Kenny Music Performance Anxiety Inventory-Revised (K-MPAI-R), Almost Perfect Scale-Revised (R-APS) and Music Performance Self-Efficacy Scale (MPSES). The results show a significant gender difference in MPA, with women experiencing higher levels of MPA on three factors: proximal somatic anxiety and worry about performance (t(148)=2.29; p=.02), negative cognitions (t(148)=3.26; p<.001) and psychological vulnerability (t(148)=2.31; p=.02), and also in adaptive perfectionism (t(148)=2.24; p=.03). Additionally, the following correlations were significant: MPA and maladaptive perfectionism correlated positively (r(150)=.65; p<.001) and MPA and music performance self-efficacy negatively (r(148)=-.50; p<.001). Furthermore, music performance self efficacy correlated negatively with maladaptive perfectionism (r(148)=-.36; p<.001), and positively with adaptive perfectionism (r(148)=.21; p=.01).
