Abstract
It is inevitable that partners in close relationships will eventually behave
badly. How the personreacts when his/her partner has engaged in a potentially
destructive act, is an important indicator of how succesful the relationship is. The aim of
this study was to explore the relationship between attachment, promotion- and
prevention-focused relationship behavior, and accommodation strategies. 973 people
aged between 18 and 49, who were involved in a heterosexual dating relationship,
participated in the study. The following instruments were used in the online survey:
Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Accommodation Scale, Modified version of
Brennan’s Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory, and Regulatory Focus in
Relationships Scale. There was a significant correlation between accommodation,
attachment and regulatory focus. Attachment and regulatory focus were significant
predictors of both constructive and destructive accommodation strategies, but some
results differed along gender lines.
