Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to emphasize the importance of public advocacy as a tool in ensuring the greater visibility of public libraries, in the light of the 2030 Agenda implementation. The essential elements in the advocacy campaign process, difference between advocacy and marketing, and the positive examples of advocacy campaigns in Europe and Croatia, are listed and explained. Further, the results of a survey of the directors of public libraries in Primorje-Gorski Kotar county about the knowledge of public advocacy concepts and its implementation are discussed. Survey responses provide an insight into the potential goals of future public advocacy campaigns and highlighted potential problems, such as insufficient general knowledge concerning the influence of public libraries on the community and society as a whole. Public advocacy is not an established practice in Croatian librarianship and there is insufficient knowledge of the advocacy process. However, there is some awareness of the importance of future work in this field. This thesis opens this topic to academic research in Croatia and provides an incentive for more detailed research at the national level.
