Abstract
In this undergraduate thesis, we have studied and confirmed the importance of developing and acquiring reading habits by studying the reader habits of the target group – high school students aged 15 to 18, users of a public library, Knežija Library, a member of the Zagreb City Libraries network. According to previous studies, it is this adolescent group that most often loses interest in reading. We have also addressed the current problem of young readers and their resistance to obligatory reading – assigned reading. The research was focused on the needs of high school students, users of Knežija Library, emphasizing the student reading skill programs in the public library branch, and finding and applying new methods and ways to achieve students’ personal motivation. The contribution of the research is multifaceted: in addition to revealing young peoples’ attitudes with respect to reading, it also disproves established notions that the female population of that age is prevalent in numbers, since statistics confirm that there were more male participants in the study, i.e. readers/users of Knežija Library. In this thesis, we have taken into the account all the ideas expressed by our young subjects, related to further development of library services and programs for young people in public libraries.
