Abstract
The Manuscript Found in Saragossa by Jan Potocki is a novel with an intricate structure. Its complex narration and stories of different genres make it difficult to put the novel into only one category. These stories are intertwined by elements better known in history of literature as Gothic. Finding those particular elements is the main focus of this work. This paper analyzes the influence of typical elements of Gothic novel such as the castle (its interior and exterior), the inner struggle with supernatural, the fear as the initiator of the stories as well as the role of supernatural beings. The focal point of the paper is the narrative of the novel which is one of the greatest features of the Gothic novel in general. The unique narrative structure plays an important role in this paper while the skillful use of transitional formulas in narration builds the complex fabular structure of the Gothic novel.
