Abstract
This paper presents stone sculptures of an sculptor from Varazdin, Ivan Jakob Altenbach. His
only documented work leads us to stone sculptures whose specific drape form, face visage and
iconographic topics can easily be recognized as this sculptor’s technique. Altenbach’s
achievements in wood, but also in stone, are considered to be forerunner of baroque. Art
historians, in the first place Doris Baričević, usually add stone sculptures when they talk about
entire art work of this sculptor. In that way they enrich his oeuvre and they mention his name
more often.
