Abstract

The research presented in this paper looks into different forms of language exposure present among young Croatian EFL learners. The main aim is to examine whether the frequency of out-of-class exposure relates to learners' success in their primary school EFL classes. The study is based on data collected from Croatian grade eight pupils by means of a questionnaire. The results show that learners who frequently engage in out-of-class activities in English have more success in their formal EFL education. In addition, the study investigated the frequency of various out-of-class activities and found that TV programmes and films, music and the Internet are the main source of exposure for Croatian EFL learners. Analysis were also made regarding possible differences in the frequency of informal exposure according to gender and start age of formal EFL education.
