Abstract
As a result of its long history, South African English is a complex linguistic, social and cultural mix of English varieties and dialects. Following British colonization and settlement the English language prevailed during the nineteenth century in the whole region of South Africa and has remained dominant up to the present day. The aim of this thesis is to examine the linguistic features of contemporary South African English, based on the analysis of the popular TV reality show – The Voice singing contest. The first part of the thesis provides a theoretical overview of the historical background, origins, and socio-linguistic development of South African English. The second part presents the results on an empirical analysis of SAE features in the speech of the coaches and hosts involved in the show. A comparison is made between the speech of traditional dialect speakers and that of modern generations, with the aim of establishing whether there is any significant difference between the two categories of speakers and how much variation there is in general within the corpus used for the present thesis.
