Abstract
As one of the religious phenomena that changed the socio-cultural landscape of the Indian subcontinent, bhakti deserves special attention in religious and literary sense. What came before the bhakti movement, why and how did it came to be and what are its implications on brahmanism are some of the questions that I will try to find an answer to in this work. The main focus of the work will be on the kṛṣṇaistic bhakti and its literature which will be exemplified by Jayadeva's Gītagovinda which intends to show how much were literary and religious conventions, that were defining the future of the social and religious communities of the Indian subcontinent, changed.
