Abstract

Industrial heritage represent a set of remnants of industrial culture that has historical, tehnological, social, architectural and scientific value. By researching the history of industrial development, it is clear that the process od industrialization has been the key initiator of change in the economic and social context for over a three centuries, while industrial architecture best describes the importance of the industry in the context of historical development and the use of new technologies as the bearer of these changes. Industrial history of Croatia today, together with the World's, shares the same fate of the neglected examples of modern industrial architecture. Among this examples stands a Fotokemika factory in Zagreb and Samobor, which represents an important segment of the development industrial heritage in Croatia in second half of the 20th century. Both factories were closed and left forgetfulness regardless of their historical, scientific and cultural value. This thesis briefly argues about the history of industry and industrial architecture in the world and Croatia and emphasizes the need for its protection and preservation. A review of the history of the Fotokemika factory was presented based on the data obtained through archival and field research. Current state of the Fotokemika factory is bad and poor, so protection methods are necessary for it's further life. The suggestion of the notional project of interpretative centre wanted to highlight the opportunities offered by the former premises of industrial plants and to raise awareness among the society on the potential of those sites.
