Abstract

This graduate thesis is a concise summary of development of the renaissance theatre in Italy with an emphasis on the first immobile theatre buildings, Palladio's Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza and Scamozzi's Teatro all'antica in Sabbioneta, and the first scenographic projects of renaissance artists inspired by the evolution of perspective painting. Italian influence on the development of the renaissance theatre model, based on antique treaties and Vitruvius as an authority, manifested itself in Dubrovnik. The center of renaissance theatre in Dubrovnik is Marin Držić, connoisseur of italian theatrical forms, performance and Serlio's descriptions of scenographic spaces. In the absence of the more extensive examination of theatre development in Croatia and its italian influence in high school programs, and also of the lack of preserved croatian renaissance scenographies, the idea of a high school project was created. This paper introduces the proposal for a teaching project of Visual Arts called Držić's arkiteti which would familiarize the students with the stage design process, introduce them to renaissance architectural and decorative elements and enable them to collaborate in shaping Držić's dramatic spaces into their own scenographies.
