Abstract

This thesis comprises five annotated translations, accompanied by a discussion. The translations are excerpts from four books and a manual. The first two excerpts translated from English into Croatian originate from The Science of Willpower by Kelly McGonigal and Social Class in the 21st Century by Mike Savage et al. The next two excerpts come from the novels Ženski udesi by Živko Bertić and Oči by Edo Popović, which were translated from English into Croatian. The final translation from English into Croatian is an excerpt from the UNHCR Resettlement Handbook. The discussion of this thesis focused on the problems encountered when translating accents, dialects and slang. As these elements are more common in literary texts, the selected examples used in the discussion to illustrate these problems were found in Bertić’s and Popović’s texts since both novels use non-standard Croatian. The discussion analyses different approaches and strategies of translating accents, dialects and slang and it focused primarily on finding a balance between the domestication and foreignization of non-standard speech.
