Abstract

This paper analyses personal data protection measures, which the European Union recognised as necessary and therefore adopted the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which came into effect on May 25, 2018. GDPR enables citizens of the EU to exercise greater control over their personal data that organisations collect and process in order to provide them with services. This paper will present the results of a research on the level of personal data protection in the Library of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. The research will be compared with the results of a 2007 study on the level of user anonymity in Croatian and Dutch libraries. In modern-day information society, whose development depends on data processing, it is necessary to regulate the collection and processing of personal data so as to protect the individual’s rights, and so that their data would not be abused.
