Abstract
This paper introduces the concept of metadata. It states three types of metadata and describes their characteristics. The paper explains metadata functions and their role in archives.
Standards and schemes are crucial for controlled creation of metadata. This paper presents two metadata standards which are important for archival description. It presents ISAD(G) or General International Standard for Archival Description and ISAAR(CPF) or International Standard Archival Authority Record for Corporate Bodies Persons and Families), describes their purpose and states elements for archival description defined in these two standards. Also, it presents EAD, a standard used to encode finding aids, describes development and purpose of the standard.
