Abstract
In the area of Novo mesto there are 13 archaeological sites that date from the Neolithic period
to the Middle Ages. Two sites from the Early Iron Age stand out. The tumulus cemeteries Kandija
and Kapiteljska njiva, the latter of which is also the subject of this treatment. Prehistoric burial ground Kapiteljska njiva is the largest cemetery in Novo mesto. It lies on
the domed hill NW of the old town center and right next to the prehistoric fortified settlement
Marof. Burial continued during all of the first millennium BC, from the Late Bronze Age through
the Early and Late Iron Age.
By the autumn of 2018, 340 cremation Late Bronze Age burials, 67 barrows with 1156 inhumation
and 3 cremation graves were excavated, dating from the Podzemelj phase to the end oft he
Negova phase, 711 graves from the Late Iron Age and only one Early Medieval grave. At the end
of the 19th century, two barrows with Early Iron Age and Late Iron Age graves were excavated
there, but I did not account for them in my treatment of the cemetery due to unreliable data.
